Job interview: Delivery driver

You are entrusted with a vehicle, goods and the company’s image: show that you are careful, punctual and honest.

THE JOB

What recruiters expect

A beginner is expected to have a valid licence for the vehicle concerned, to drive carefully, to know the town and to be well presented. An experienced candidate is expected to organise a round independently, to look after the vehicle, to handle documents and cash collected without error, and to get on well with customers.

Skills assessed at interview

  • Careful driving and respect for the highway code
  • Knowledge of the town and organisation of a delivery round
  • Care of the vehicle and routine checks
  • Rigour with goods, documents and money
  • Courtesy with customers and punctuality

QUESTIONS WITH ADVICE

Seven questions to prepare

  1. 01

Which vehicles have you driven, for how long and on which routes?

State your licence categories, the types of vehicle and the areas you know well. Bring your original, valid licence. If you have had an accident, say so simply and explain what you learned from it.

  2. 02

What do you check on the vehicle before you set off?

Describe your usual walk-round check of the vehicle and of the documents on board, as you actually do it. Make clear that you report any fault before leaving, in writing if the company requires it. The recruiter wants to see a habit, not a recited list.

  3. 03

How do you organise a round of several deliveries?

Explain how you order the deliveries according to areas, customers’ opening hours and traffic. Say how you load the vehicle so as to unload in the right order. Mention a round that you managed to shorten.

  4. 04

The customer is absent or refuses the goods. What do you do?

Answer that you call the customer, then your manager, before any decision. Make clear that you note the reason on the delivery note and that you bring the goods back in good condition. Never leave a parcel with a third party without agreement.

  5. 05

How do you handle the money collected on delivery?

Show that you count in front of the customer, give a receipt and keep this money separate from your own. Say that you hand over the takings and the supporting documents as soon as you return, against a signature. Here the recruiter is assessing your honesty.

  6. 06

You are stopped at a roadside check or you have a minor collision. How do you react?

Say that you stay calm and courteous, present the vehicle’s documents and inform your manager. In the event of a minor collision, explain that you make the scene safe and follow the company’s procedure. Never offer to settle the problem through a personal arrangement.

  7. 07

Are you available early in the morning, on Saturdays or for journeys out of town?

Answer frankly about your availability and your constraints. Explain how you organise yourself to arrive on time, even early. Availability that is promised and then not honoured costs you your probationary period.

Common mistakes

  • Coming without your original licence or with a licence that does not match the vehicle.
  • Hiding an accident or a dismissal that the former employer will confirm.
  • Boasting about delivering fast by taking risks on the road.

Questions to ask the recruiter

  • What type of vehicle will I drive and who is responsible for its maintenance?
  • What are the delivery areas and the usual working hours?
  • How are fuel, cash collected and any overtime managed?
